The Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Executive Council remains divided over Otto Addo’s tenure as head coach of the Black Stars, following an unprecedented failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) — a first in over two decades.
During a grueling five-hour meeting on November 20, 2024, Otto Addo presented a comprehensive report detailing the reasons behind the team’s poor showing in the AFCON qualifiers. Ghana ended their campaign bottom of Group F, amassing only three points from six games without a single victory — a dismal performance that sparked heated discussions among GFA leadership.
GFA Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, shed light on the contentious meeting. “Some members of the Executive Council believe Otto Addo is not the right man to lead the Black Stars forward,” he disclosed in an interview with Joy FM.
“There was a faction arguing that if you play six matches and fail to win even one, there’s no justification for continuing. They called for a new direction,” Asante Twum revealed. However, others maintained that Addo, who is on a long-term contract, deserves a second chance with an overhauled management team and stronger support structures.
The council’s indecision leaves the future of Ghana’s national team in limbo as the country braces for World Cup qualifiers and other upcoming tournaments.
