Super Eagles stars Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi have been integral to Fulham’s Premier League campaign, featuring prominently in every game this season. The duo were in action again as Marco Silva’s Fulham fought to a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The match was crucial for Fulham, who were looking to bounce back from a disappointing 4-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers last week. Determined to make amends, the Cottagers put in a spirited performance against Ange Postecoglu’s high-flying Spurs.
Alex Iwobi shone in the encounter, creating two key chances and coming agonizingly close to scoring, with one of his shots rattling the crossbar. Brennan Johnson’s opener for Spurs was canceled out by Fulham captain Tom Cairney, who converted following Iwobi’s brilliant hold-up play. However, Fulham’s momentum took a hit when Cairney was sent off for a rash challenge on Dejan Kulusevski.
Speaking after the game, Calvin Bassey expressed disappointment that Fulham couldn’t secure all three points despite dominating large parts of the match.
“I think it’s a hard one; I think we deserved more,” Bassey told Fulham TV. “They had Fraser Forster who made three top saves that could have been goals. We were unlucky.
We also had a man sent off when we started gaining momentum, but on a positive note, we were able to maintain it and ensure we didn’t concede late, something that has been a problem in some of our past games. We were composed and dealt with the challenge well.”
Despite the setback, Bassey praised the team’s resilience and expressed optimism about the future. “No matter who we play, we’re confident in our abilities and trust what the manager is doing. We’re going to keep playing our way, and sometimes we get caught, but we could have gone on to win.
We needed a reaction after the Wolves defeat, and hopefully, we gave a good impression to the fans. We’ve got a busy week ahead, so it’s nice to carry some confidence into the next few games.”
Fulham now turn their attention to back-to-back home fixtures at Craven Cottage, first against Brighton on Thursday, followed by a clash with Arsenal on Sunday.
