A Passion for Youth Development
Michael Essien, Ghanaian football legend and former Chelsea star, has opened up about his admiration for the Right to Dream project—a youth development initiative that influenced his decision to join Danish club FC Nordsjaelland as an assistant coach.
In an interview with the BBC, Essien explained that his long-standing connection with Tom Vernon, the founder of both the Right to Dream Academy and FC Nordsjaelland, played a pivotal role.
“A Shared Vision for Growth”
“I’ve known Tom Vernon since I was 17 or 18, and we’ve kept in touch throughout my career,” Essien revealed. When Vernon invited him to learn more about the Right to Dream initiative, Essien was immediately impressed.
“He told me about the whole project. I came, and it was a nice environment. So I said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to work here.'”
Essien praised the academy’s mission of nurturing young football talent and creating pathways to professional careers.
“What stood out to me is how they give young boys a chance to experience professional football,” he said.
An Ideal Environment
Beyond its focus on youth development, Essien highlighted the supportive and tranquil atmosphere at FC Nordsjaelland as a significant draw.
“It’s calmer; the environment is very nice and healthy. Everyone is ready to help whenever you need,” he noted.
Essien’s work with Nordsjaelland reflects his commitment to fostering young talent and contributing to the club’s reputation as a hub for emerging stars.
