In football, some of the greatest assists happen off the pitch. For Ghanaian coach Bismark Kobi Mensah, one such assist came from none other than Black Stars legend Michael Essien, whose selfless generosity changed the trajectory of Mensah’s career.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Mensah revealed how Essien went above and beyond to support him during a crucial phase of his life. Their friendship dates back to their secondary school days and playing together for the Black Starlets. Yet, Essien’s kindness extended far beyond their shared history.
“Michael Essien has been more than a friend; he’s like family,” Mensah said. “He paid a significant amount of money for me to pursue my coaching courses in England. Honestly, I don’t think even a family member would do what Essien has done for me.”
Essien’s gesture underscores the values that have defined his career both on and off the field. Known for his powerful performances and versatility, the former Chelsea star enjoyed a glittering career, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. With 58 caps and nine goals for the Black Stars, his contributions to Ghanaian football remain unparalleled.
Since retiring, Essien has transitioned into coaching, earning his UEFA coaching license and serving in various coaching roles, including a stint as a player-coach for Sabail FK in Azerbaijan. Currently, he’s developing young talent as part of the coaching staff at FC Nordsjælland in Denmark.
For Kobi Mensah, Essien’s impact is a lasting reminder of the power of friendship and the importance of paying it forward.
