“Laryea Kingston Reveals His Best Black Stars XI, Excludes Agogo and Annan”

Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has unveiled his all-time best Black Stars XI from his playing era, sparking conversations with some notable omissions. The 44-year-old, who earned 40 caps for Ghana and scored six goals, revealed his lineup during an interview, opting for a 4-4-2 formation stacked with familiar names from Ghana’s golden years.

Kingston’s Best Black Stars XI:

Goalkeeper: Richard Kingson

Defenders: John Paintsil (RB), John Mensah (CB), Eric Addo (CB), Hans Adu Sarpei (LB)

Midfielders: Laryea Kingston (himself), Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari

Forwards: Asamoah Gyan, Matthew Amoah

While Kingston’s selection highlights the immense talent of his era, it notably excludes former fan favorites like Junior Agogo and Anthony Annan, both of whom played pivotal roles for the Black Stars during their careers.

Kingston’s international career, which spanned from 2002 to 2010, saw him as a key player in Ghana’s midfield, but his journey was not without its challenges. He missed out on World Cup selection twice, first in 2006 and again in 2010, a disappointment that eventually led to his retirement from the national team.

Post-retirement, Kingston transitioned into coaching, recently leading Ghana’s U-17 side, the Black Starlets, in the 2025 U-17 AFCON qualifiers. Despite a strong start in the WAFU-B competition, his team fell short, finishing fourth. Kingston has since stepped down from his role but remains a respected figure in Ghanaian football.

His Best XI serves as a nostalgic reminder of Ghana’s footballing strength during his era while igniting debates among fans about those who were left out.
