Promise David: From Obscurity to Stardom – The Battle Between Canada and Nigeria for Union SG’s Rising Star

A New Star Emerges in Belgium
When Union Saint-Gilloise sold Victor Boniface to Bayer Leverkusen in 2023 for a record €21.7 million, they faced an uphill battle to replace the Nigerian forward who had lit up the Belgian Pro League and the Europa League. Enter Promise Oluwatobi Emmanuel David Akinpelu, a name that is fast becoming synonymous with goals and headlines in Belgium.

Born in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, and of Nigerian heritage, David’s journey to Union SG has been anything but conventional. Starting at Toronto FC Academy before winding through Vaughan Azzurri, Croatia, Malta, and Estonia, David seemed destined to remain an unheralded journeyman. But his talent and perseverance refused to go unnoticed.

After a sensational spell with Estonian side Nõmme Kalju in early 2023, where he scored 14 goals in just 16 matches, Union SG snapped him up in July 2024 for €400,000. It was a modest fee for a player who is now proving to be one of their most inspired acquisitions in years.

Filling Boniface’s Shoes
Stepping into the void left by Boniface was no easy task. The former Union SG striker had dazzled with 17 goals and 12 assists in 51 games before his big-money move to Germany. Yet, David seems to be thriving under the weight of expectation.

The 22-year-old debuted in style, helping Union SG win the Belgian Super Cup against Club Brugge, his first silverware. Since then, he has racked up eight goals and an assist in 13 appearances across all competitions. This includes a brace in last night’s thrilling 3-2 victory over KAA Gent in the Croky Cup, extending his incredible run to seven goals in his last six games.

If David’s trajectory continues, Union SG could once again be fielding offers from Europe’s elite clubs, just as they did with Boniface.

The International Tug of War
David’s blistering form has sparked a race between Canada and Nigeria to secure his international allegiance. Eligible to represent both nations, the young striker has already tasted action for Nigeria’s U23 team during the 2022 U-23 AFCON qualifiers. However, until he earns a senior cap, the door remains open for Canada.

For Canadian fans, the thought of pairing Promise David with Lille star Jonathan David is tantalizing. But Nigeria might have the edge, having introduced him to their system early.

With the Super Eagles struggling to find consistency among their forwards on the international stage, David could be the spark they desperately need. His speed, technical ability, and predatory instincts in front of goal would be a perfect fit for Nigeria’s attack.

Meanwhile, Canada, fresh off their World Cup experience, will be eager to bolster their squad with a player of David’s caliber as they build toward future tournaments.

A Star in the Making
Promise David’s story is one of grit, resilience, and relentless ambition. From the humble pitches of Vaughan Azzurri to the bright lights of Union SG, he has proven that talent coupled with determination can defy the odds.

As Nigeria and Canada vie for his loyalty, one thing is certain—whoever wins will gain a player capable of shaping their footballing future.

For now, though, Union SG are basking in the brilliance of their new wonderkid, and they couldn’t be happier.
