On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the Royal Palace in Rabat hosted a pivotal Council of Ministers meeting chaired by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The session spotlighted Morocco’s progress in co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, showcasing the nation’s ambitious vision for this global sporting event.
Mr. Fouzi Lekjaa, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance in charge of the Budget and Chairman of the 2030 World Cup Committee, presented a detailed update on Morocco’s preparations. He highlighted the successful submission of the joint bid to FIFA on July 29, 2024, which received glowing evaluations in FIFA’s November 29 report. This milestone sets the stage for a final decision at the upcoming FIFA Council Congress.
In alignment with King Mohammed VI’s directives, a broad-based committee has been formed, bringing together civil society, Moroccan expatriates, and African talents. The committee’s focus spans critical infrastructure and development projects, including:
Upgrading stadiums to world-class standards
Expanding airports in host cities
Enhancing road networks and transportation
Developing hotels, commercial hubs, and modern medical facilities
Strengthening telecommunications infrastructure
Launching youth training programs to empower the next generation
These efforts aim to position Morocco as a hub for sustainable growth, job creation, and international cooperation, using the World Cup as a catalyst for economic transformation and global unity.
In addition to World Cup discussions, the Council approved six international conventions, further strengthening Morocco’s global partnerships. These agreements address criminal justice, military collaboration, and the mutual recognition of driving licenses.
The session concluded with the appointment of Zouhair Chorfi as Chairman of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority. The King emphasized reforming the authority’s mandate to encompass natural gas and hydrogen sectors, aligning with global energy standards.
This historic meeting underscores Morocco’s commitment to advancing its global standing while promoting peace, development, and the universal values that the World Cup symbolizes.
