AZ Alkmaar extended their dominance over FC Groningen with a 3-1 victory in the KNVB Cup second round at the AFAS Stadion. Dutch-born Ghanaian winger Jayden Addai stole the spotlight with a stunning late goal, ensuring his side’s progression to the next round.
The match began with an electric start from AZ, as Ernest Poku’s precision assist found Sven Mijnans, who slotted home in the fourth minute to give the hosts an early lead. However, Groningen showed resilience, equalizing just before halftime through Leandro Bacuna’s coolly converted penalty in the 41st minute.
The second half saw AZ wrestle back control. Ruben van Bommel restored the lead in the 70th minute, finishing smartly after Troy Parrott’s deft pass. With the game finely poised, manager Pascal Jansen introduced Jayden Addai in the 79th minute—and the Ghanaian youngster didn’t disappoint.
In the 84th minute, Addai showcased his flair during a blistering counterattack. Receiving a well-timed pass from Dave Kwakman, he unleashed a brilliant left-footed strike into the bottom corner, putting the match out of Groningen’s reach.
AZ dominated possession with 56% and fired 22 shots to underline their control of the match. Now, with momentum on their side, they turn their attention to a crucial Eredivisie clash against FC Twente on December 21.
