In the vibrant world of Ghanaian football, a new star is emerging—20-year-old Jerry Afriyie. Having dominated youth tournaments with his flair and instinct for goals, Afriyie is now on the cusp of senior football, but Black Galaxies head coach Didi Dramani believes his transition must be handled with care.
Afriyie’s 2024 season has been nothing short of sensational. He dazzled at the African Games, clinching the Golden Boot as Ghana’s U-23 team claimed gold. His brilliance didn’t stop there; he was crowned Player of the Tournament at the WAFU B U-20 Championship after topping the scoring charts. These performances earned him a debut for the Black Stars, where he announced himself with a debut goal in an AFCON qualifier against Niger.
Now part of the Black Galaxies squad, Afriyie continues to impress, making an impact off the bench in Ghana’s goalless first-leg CHAN qualifier against Nigeria last weekend. However, Dramani remains cautious about rushing the young forward into the spotlight.
“Jerry is very mobile, a positive player, but we need to gradually integrate him into senior football,” Dramani explained. “We appreciate what he’s done so far, but his transition must be handled carefully.”
With the decisive second leg against Nigeria looming in Uyo on December 28, Afriyie will be a key player to watch. But for now, his coaches are focusing on ensuring his long-term success in the demanding world of senior football.
