Veteran coach tasked with reviving Ghana’s U17 football fortunes
In a bold move to revitalize Ghana’s U17 national team, the Black Starlets, the Ghana Football Association has named Frimpong Manso as the new head coach. The veteran tactician, who is also the head coach of Bibiani GoldStars, takes over from Laryea Kingston, who vacated the position during the Africa U17 Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Manso’s appointment marks a return to familiar territory. Between 2009 and 2010, he served as head coach of the Black Starlets, and earlier as an assistant coach. He also previously worked with Ghana’s U23 team, the Black Meteors. His vast experience includes stints with top clubs such as Asante Kotoko, Karela United, Stade d’Abidjan, and Medeama SC (formerly Kessben FC).
The Black Starlets have struggled in recent years, failing to qualify for the Africa U17 championship since their second-place finish in 2017. Manso now faces the challenge of rebuilding the squad and restoring the team’s glory as two-time African champions and Ghana’s first-ever FIFA World Cup winners.
As Manso sets his sights on qualification for the next Africa U17 Cup of Nations, Ghanaians will be hoping his expertise and experience can spark a resurgence for one of the nation’s most beloved teams.
