President Mahama Restructures Ministries: Sports and Youth Sectors Get Separate Focus

In a bold move to streamline governance and enhance sectoral efficiency, President John Mahama has restructured the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The ministry has been renamed the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, separating it from the youth-focused sector.

This decision, executed under Section 11 (3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D. Law 327), creates a standalone Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment. The move signifies the government’s commitment to providing dedicated attention to youth development while also promoting sports and recreational activities more holistically.

With the restructuring, the number of ministries in the government now stands at 23, seven fewer than the previous administration’s 30.

President Mahama is expected to announce the appointment of a new Sports and Recreation Minister next week. Among the frontrunners for the role is former Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuije, who has been widely tipped to return to the position.

The reorganization reflects the government’s focus on targeted development and efficient management of the nation’s resources.
