Despite facing challenges in club football, with only five appearances for Kasımpaşa this season, Kenneth Omeruo remains steadfast in his belief that the Super Eagles are on the brink of greatness under new head coach Eric Chelle. The 31-year-old defender, a key senior figure in Nigeria’s national team, praised the appointment of Chelle, highlighting the fresh opportunity it presents for players like him who have struggled with regular minutes at club level.
Omeruo noted that Chelle’s experience with Mali, where he orchestrated an organized and disciplined style of play, would seamlessly transition into the Super Eagles’ setup. “With the level of talent in the Super Eagles, Chelle won’t have any trouble getting us to play the way he wants,” said Omeruo, emphasizing the team’s potential under his leadership.
The Super Eagles vice-captain also took time to acknowledge the contributions of Augustine Eguavoen, who temporarily guided the team to improved performances during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after a tough period under Finidi George. Omeruo credited Eguavoen with revitalizing the squad’s morale, stating, “When Eguavoen took over, our confidence was low, but he helped us regain it. Now, when we are at our best, no country can stand against the Super Eagles.”
As Nigeria’s focus shifts to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Omeruo is confident that the combination of Chelle’s tactical acumen and the team’s immense talent will propel them toward their goal. Nigeria will kick off their qualifying campaign with a crucial match against Rwanda on March 19th, followed by a clash with Zimbabwe three days later.
