Amid the chaos of civil unrest and the suspension of domestic football, Sudan’s national team achieved a remarkable feat—qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The man behind this triumph, Kwesi Appiah, leaned heavily on players from Al Hilal and Al Merreikh to navigate an uphill battle.
Appiah, a former Ghana captain and coach of the Black Stars during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, took on the role of Sudan’s head coach under extraordinary circumstances. With no active domestic league due to the ongoing conflict, Appiah had to rely on a limited pool of players. Al Hilal and Al Merreikh became his lifeline, though only Al Hilal remains active amidst the turmoil.
“It’s been tough without a domestic league,” Appiah admitted in an interview with CAF. “Since I took over, I’ve had to rely on players from just two clubs—Al Hilal and Al Merreikh. Even now, only Al Hilal is active.”
Despite these challenges, Appiah praised the resilience of his squad, which includes players who compete abroad, primarily in Libya. Their dedication and professionalism kept Sudan’s AFCON dreams alive.
“The lack of league football limits our options, but the players who remain active have been giving their all. Some also play abroad, which helps keep them in form,” he said.
Sudan, now gearing up for the continental showdown in Morocco, aims to leave a lasting impression under Appiah’s inspiring leadership. The journey may have been daunting, but the determination of Sudan’s team has made it a story of hope and perseverance.
