Otto Addo Urged to Select Committed Players for Crucial World Cup Qualifiers

After the heartbreak of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in two decades, Ghana’s focus now shifts to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With a crucial doubleheader against Chad and Madagascar on the horizon, former GHALCA chairman Kudjoe Fianoo has issued a passionate plea to Black Stars head coach Otto Addo: choose the right players.

In a recent interview with Asempa FM, Fianoo emphasized that Ghana cannot afford another setback and must qualify for the World Cup at all costs. However, he believes success will depend on selecting players who are truly committed to the national cause.

“We must qualify for the World Cup, but the coach must select the right players who will compete for the country because we all want to be at the tournament,” he said.

Reflecting on the Black Stars’ recent struggles, Fianoo questioned whether the team’s inconsistency stems from coaching decisions or player selection. While he expressed surprise at Otto Addo’s retention following the AFCON failure, he insisted that dedication should now be the priority.

“Our challenges started in Cameroon, and the question has always been— is it the coach or the players? After every tournament, we’ve seen changes, yet the struggles continue. The decision to keep Otto Addo was unexpected, but moving forward, only players ready to fight for the badge should be invited,” Fianoo added.

Despite his concerns, the veteran football administrator assured his unwavering support for the Black Stars as they prepare for their must-win qualifiers.

“As a Ghanaian, what I can do is help the team in prayers ahead of every game.”

Ghana will first host Chad before traveling to Madagascar for their Matchday 5 and 6 encounters in the World Cup qualifiers. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and Fianoo’s words serve as a reminder that only the most committed players should wear the national colors.
