Nico Williams has been under scrutiny this season, with some critics attributing his dip in form to his decision to stay at Athletic Bilbao rather than join Barcelona. While last season saw him shine with eight goals and 16 assists in 37 games, his current tally of six goals and seven assists in 32 matches has raised questions.
However, his older brother and teammate, Iñaki Williams, has stepped up to defend him. Speaking to Gol, Iñaki acknowledged the pressures Nico faces, particularly as a young player making major career choices under public scrutiny.
“Everything that happened to him wasn’t easy. He’s a very young boy. Everything came to him very quickly,” Iñaki said. “Having to make decisions alone is always complicated, especially when they put words in your mouth that you’ve never said.”
He emphasized that choosing a different path from what others expect doesn’t mean making a mistake. Despite the noise, Iñaki believes Nico is on the right track and hopes he can maintain his form for the rest of the season.
The Williams brothers, born to Ghanaian parents in Spain, have both made significant marks in football. While Nico continues to develop his game, Iñaki has already cemented his legacy at Athletic Bilbao, setting a La Liga record for consecutive appearances and helping the club secure the 2023-24 Copa del Rey title.
Through challenges and expectations, one thing remains constant—brotherly support.
