Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro’s Penalty Heroics Propel AZ Alkmaar to KNVB Cup Final

In a thrilling KNVB Cup semi-final clash, Ghanaian goalkeeper Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro emerged as AZ Alkmaar’s savior, leading them past Heracles Almelo in a dramatic penalty shootout.

The 20-year-old shot-stopper showcased his brilliance throughout the match, making crucial saves to keep AZ in contention. Despite an electrifying contest that ended 2-2 in regulation time, Owusu-Oduro’s heroics in the penalty shootout ensured his team’s place in the final.

AZ started strong, with Dutch-Ghanaian forward Ernest Poku opening the scoring just 12 minutes into the game. However, Heracles Almelo responded quickly, equalizing through Damon Mirani. Mayckel Lahdo restored AZ’s lead ten minutes later, but Suf Podgoreanu’s late strike pushed the match into extra time.

With Heracles pressing for a winner, Owusu-Oduro stood firm, pulling off incredible saves to deny the home side. As the match headed to penalties, the young Ghanaian took center stage, saving two spot-kicks to seal a 4-3 shootout victory for AZ.

Ghanaian winger Ibrahim Sadiq also featured in the latter stages of extra time, replacing Poku. Now, AZ Alkmaar will set their sights on the KNVB Cup final, where they will face Go Ahead Eagles in April.

Owusu-Oduro’s standout performance has further cemented his reputation as one of the brightest young goalkeepers in European football.
