At 36, Leon Balogun refuses to back down from a challenge. The experienced Super Eagles defender has been a key figure for Rangers this season, helping them navigate a rollercoaster campaign. While his resurgence wasn’t enough to earn a spot in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Balogun remains focused on achieving something special in Europe.
After a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Fenerbahce, Rangers secured their place in the Europa League quarter-finals, setting up a clash with Athletic Bilbao. Balogun, who was part of the Gers’ squad that reached the 2022 final, believes history can be made again.
“You always enter competitions to win them. Nothing is impossible. We’ve been here before, and while we need a bit of luck, we showed today that we can fight,” Balogun stated, urging his teammates to believe in their potential.
Beyond their European aspirations, Rangers face a crucial Old Firm Derby against Celtic this Sunday. With the league title slipping away, Balogun insists there will be no excuses for fatigue.
“They might think we’ll be tired, but we showed great character. We have to bring that same fight into Sunday’s game and make sure we represent the badge with pride,” he added.
Rangers sit second in the SPFL, trailing Celtic by sixteen points. While domestic silverware may be out of reach, Balogun remains determined to end the season on a high, leading his side towards potential Europa League glory.
