Igho Ogbu: From Norway’s Temptation to Super Eagles Dream

A Father’s Wish and a Nigerian Dream
When Igho Ogbu received an opportunity to represent Norway, he faced a decision that would shape his career. It wasn’t just about football—it was about identity, loyalty, and honoring his late father’s wishes.

Ogbu, who began his European journey in 2018, had become a standout defender in Norway, playing for Rosenborg, Levanger, Sogndal, and later Lillestrøm. His stellar performances caught the attention of the Norwegian football federation, who saw in him a potential addition to their national team.

However, Ogbu’s heart was always set on Nigeria. Having represented the Flying Eagles at the 2019 U-20 AFCON and FIFA U-20 World Cup, he remained steadfast in his dream of wearing the green and white of the Super Eagles.

“There was a chance to play for Norway in my last season with Lillestrøm,” he told SCORENigeria. “But I always knew that I would also get my chance with the Super Eagles.”

That patience and belief have paid off. Now 25, the Slavia Prague centre-back has earned his first senior call-up for Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

A Rising Star in Europe
Ogbu arrives at the Super Eagles camp in top form. His recent performances for Slavia Prague have not gone unnoticed, particularly his historic goal against FK Jablonec. Scoring his first-ever left-footed goal, Ogbu showcased his growing versatility as a defender who can also contribute offensively.

Slavia Prague coach Jindřich Trpišovský was full of praise for the Nigerian, emphasizing his defensive dominance and emerging attacking prowess.

“Igoh usually defends the opponent’s best player and can be dominant in duels,” Trpišovský noted. “He has calmed down recently, feels good, and I think it was his first goal with his left foot in his career.”

With two goals in his last three league matches, Ogbu is proving to be more than just a defensive wall. Nine of his ten career goals have been headers, but his latest strikes suggest a more complete player is emerging.

A Key Asset for Nigeria
As Nigeria seeks to navigate the road to the 2026 World Cup, Ogbu’s presence could be vital. With his aerial strength, defensive awareness, and newfound goal-scoring ability, he has all the attributes needed to cement a spot in the Super Eagles’ defense.

His journey—from rejecting Norway’s call to earning a place in Nigeria’s squad—speaks volumes about his commitment and belief in his roots. If his club form is any indication, Ogbu is ready to make a lasting impact on the international stage.
