Benjamin Asare’s Rise: From Local Hero to Black Stars’ Number One

Benjamin Asare’s journey to becoming Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper is a testament to patience, hard work, and seizing the right opportunity. Once a modest figure in the local leagues, Asare now stands tall as the man trusted to guard the Black Stars’ goalposts.

The 32-year-old Hearts of Oak shot-stopper recently earned his maiden call-up to the senior national team for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers—and he did not disappoint.

Replacing Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Asare delivered two commanding performances, keeping clean sheets in Ghana’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad and a 3-0 triumph against Madagascar. His assured displays earned him the trust of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, who has confirmed Asare will continue as the team’s number one goalkeeper.

Among those backing Asare is former Ghana international Dan Quaye. Speaking to Bryt FM, Quaye—a member of Ghana’s historic 2006 World Cup squad—voiced his confidence in Asare’s abilities.

“Benjamin Asare deserves to be Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper. He is experienced and has been in the system for a long time. He played for lower-tier clubs before moving to Great Olympics and Hearts of Oak,” Quaye said.

Quaye also emphasized the importance of giving local goalkeepers a platform to shine. “We all know the impact local goalkeepers have had on the national team, so I wasn’t surprised by his performance. I was convinced he could deliver when given the opportunity.”

Asare’s rise to prominence has become a major talking point in Ghanaian football. With the Black Stars set to participate in a four-nation tournament in June, all eyes will be on him to maintain his impressive form. Later in September, Asare will aim to solidify his place during the crucial Matchday 7 and 8 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali.

From humble beginnings to the national spotlight, Benjamin Asare’s story continues to inspire as he takes center stage for the Black Stars.
