Lalas Abubakar is coming home—at least for a day.
When FC Dallas travels to face the Colorado Rapids in their MLS home opener this Saturday, all eyes will be on one familiar face: the Ghanaian center back whose heart, hustle, and signature double scissor kicks became part of Rapids lore.
“It’s going to be special,” Abubakar said, a smile stretching across his face at the thought of stepping onto the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park pitch once more. After six impactful seasons in burgundy and blue, his return is more than just another fixture—it’s an emotional reunion.
Former teammate and current Rapids right back Reggie Cannon chuckled recalling the defender’s eccentricities. “Lalas does this double scissor kick like he’s doing a bicycle, launching the ball 100 feet. That’s just him—200% effort, all the time.”
That effort, combined with a joyful spirit and unwavering commitment, won over not just teammates and coaches, but an entire fanbase. Whether crashing into headers on set pieces or spending time with the Rapids’ Special Olympics Unified team, Abubakar gave everything to Colorado.
Rapids head coach Chris Armas, who arrived during a difficult transitional season, credits Abubakar with being a cultural anchor. “He meant a lot to this team,” Armas said. “He led the way. I’m a big Lalas fan.”
Despite his departure after Colorado declined his option last November, the respect remained mutual. “The fans made me love Colorado,” Abubakar told The Denver Post. “They made everything easier for me.”
Though now dressed in FC Dallas red, Abubakar’s heart still carries pieces of the Centennial State. And as he prepares to walk back onto the DSGP grass—where his legacy was built—one thing is certain: for him, and for those watching, this won’t just be a match. It’ll be a moment.
