Jerry Afriyie Shines Bright: Returns from AFCON U20 Duty to Rescue CD Lugo in Thrilling Draw

Fresh off international duty, Ghanaian starlet Jerry Afriyie made a stunning return to club football, inspiring CD Lugo to a dramatic 2-2 draw against Gimnàstic at the Nou Estadi Costa Daurada.

The 18-year-old forward had just completed two matches with the Black Satellites at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt before rejoining Lugo under a special agreement between the club and the Ghana Football Association. Despite arriving less than 48 hours before the match, Afriyie was thrown straight into the starting lineup—and he didn’t disappoint.

Gimnàstic took early control of the match, opening the scoring in the 28th minute through Antoñín. Joan Oriol added a second just before halftime, putting Lugo in a difficult position.

But the second half belonged to Jerry Afriyie. The teenager sparked a spirited comeback when he assisted Lizancos with just 23 minutes remaining. Then, in the dying moments of the match, Afriyie capped off a Man of the Match performance with a dramatic injury-time equalizer.

His latest heroics take his tally to three goals and two assists in just eight league appearances—a remarkable feat for a player still in his teens.

Afriyie’s performance has further cemented his status as one of Ghana’s brightest young talents and a rising force in European football.
