Ghanaian striker Kwabena Owusu has opened up on the pain and confusion surrounding his continued exclusion from the Black Stars squad, despite putting up impressive performances at club level.
Owusu, who recently wrapped up a successful loan stint at Turkish side Ankaragücü, found the back of the net nine times and registered three assists in just 15 appearances. Yet, the 26-year-old continues to be snubbed by the national team selectors—a reality he says is both disheartening and puzzling.
In an interview with Pure FM in Kumasi, the former Leganés forward could not hide his frustration.
> “It’s difficult to understand. I was receiving call-ups when I was playing in the lower divisions, but now that I’m at the top level, performing in Europe, I’ve been ignored,” Owusu lamented. “This season alone, I scored nine goals in 14 games. None of the Black Stars strikers have more goals than I do right now.”
He went on to suggest that off-the-pitch politics may be at play:
> “They say I’m disrespectful. I want them to show me where I disrespected anyone. I’ve always given my best and shown nothing but respect. I deserve a chance—my numbers speak for themselves.”
Owusu, who made his senior debut for Ghana in 2019 and featured at the AFCON tournament in Egypt, believes he has matured both as a player and a person. Now back with Ferencváros in Hungary, he remains hopeful that his consistent performances will eventually earn him another opportunity with the national team.
