From Hale End to the Basque Country: Nigerian-Eligible Midfielder Zac Shuaib Signs with Real Sociedad

After parting ways with Arsenal this summer, 18-year-old central midfielder Zac Shuaib is set to begin a new chapter in Spain, joining La Liga side Real Sociedad. According to BBC Sport, the talented quad-national — eligible to represent Nigeria, England, Spain, and India — will be unveiled soon by the San Sebastián-based club.

Shuaib is expected to link up with Sociedad’s C team, competing in the Tercera Federación – Group 4 next season. Though a fresh face in the Spanish setup, his ties to the Basque region run deep. His mother’s Gipuzkoan roots and summers spent in Hondarribia have made the move feel more like a homecoming than a relocation.

Despite a difficult year plagued by a serious injury, Shuaib showed resilience and returned to action with Arsenal’s U18s, making five appearances in the Premier League youth division. His potential still caught the eye of several clubs, including Brighton & Hove Albion, where he underwent a trial before opting for Real Sociedad.

His final trial with the Basque side — featuring in the prestigious MIC Football tournament in Girona last April — proved successful, earning him a place at the club.

Zac’s football journey began at age seven with Chiswick Youth and weaved through stints at Hanwell FC, Focus Football, London Colney Colts, and Tottenham Hotspur before he joined Arsenal’s renowned Hale End Academy in 2022.

Now, he begins a promising new phase in Spain, with eyes on rising through the ranks in San Sebastián — and possibly, on the international stage.
