AFCON 2023: Questions Raised on Super Eagles’ Performance by Football Expert

Despite Nigeria’s Super Eagles securing a spot in the semifinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 victory over Angola, there are concerns raised about the team’s performance. Alhaji Ahmed Shuaibu Gara Gombe, a two-time chairman of Gombe United Football Club, expresses skepticism about the Super Eagles deserving their place in the AFCON semifinals.

Gara Gombe, not entirely impressed with the nature of the Super Eagles’ victories, points out that the team has relied on narrow 1-0 wins and suggests that luck has played a significant role. He criticizes the team’s quality in midfield and coordination in attack, highlighting the underutilization of Victor Osimhen, the reigning African Footballer of the Year.

“We (the Super Eagles) are still wobbling, but we are moving,” Gara Gombe comments, expressing concerns about the team’s lack of coordination and scoring goals. He attributes any potential tournament win to divine intervention rather than the technical input from the coaching staff.

While crediting the defense and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for their impressive displays, Gara Gombe questions the effectiveness of the midfield and attack, citing Osimhen’s inability to receive the required services.

“The only stand-out player for me is the goalkeeper,” Gara Gombe adds, acknowledging the solid defensive performances but expressing concern about the team’s attacking capabilities.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the AFCON semifinals on Wednesday, just two wins away from potentially lifting the 34th edition of the tournament.
