Mexico City Secures Prestigious Role as Host of 2026 FIFA World Cup Opening Match

FIFA has officially disclosed the match schedule for the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026™, unveiling a series of exciting fixtures. The inaugural match is set to take place at Mexico City’s iconic Estadio Azteca on Thursday, 11 June 2026, featuring the Mexican national team. The grand finale is scheduled for Sunday, 19 July 2026, at New York New Jersey’s state-of-the-art stadium.

Canada and the United States are also poised to play their three group-stage matches on home turf, with Toronto, Los Angeles, Guadalajara, Vancouver, and Seattle hosting key matches for their respective national teams. The bronze final is set to unfold in Miami, while the much-anticipated semi-finals will take place in Dallas and Atlanta. Notably, Dallas will host the highest number of matches among all the host cities.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his excitement, emphasizing the inclusive and impactful nature of the tournament with 104 matches across 16 state-of-the-art stadiums in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. He extended gratitude to the host countries and cities for their commitment to delivering a record-setting event with a lasting legacy.

FIFA Vice-President and Concacaf President Victor Montagliani hailed the 2026 World Cup as a transformative moment and commended the three host countries for their unwavering dedication.

The innovative match schedule ensures adequate rest for teams, with the majority of matches organized into three regionalized zones (east, central, and west) to minimize travel for both teams and fans.

Key highlights include the historic opening match at Estadio Azteca, making it the third time the stadium has hosted such an event, and Canada hosting its first-ever FIFA World Cup. The USA, having previously hosted the 1994 edition, will host the tournament for the second time.

Fans can pre-register for tickets and hospitality packages on the official FIFA website, marking the countdown to an extraordinary and historic World Cup.
