Leicester City’s Carabao Cup journey came to a disappointing end after a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout loss to Huddersfield Town, with Ghana captain Jordan Ayew missing the Foxes’ first spot-kick in the decisive moments.
The second-round clash at the John Smith’s Stadium ended 2-2 in regulation time, but it was Huddersfield who held their nerve from the spot to secure progression to the next round.
Leicester, fresh from a 2-1 Championship opener victory over Sheffield Wednesday, twice surrendered their lead in a game they should have wrapped up. Ayew, brought on in the 82nd minute for Patson Daka, had little time to influence proceedings before the shootout.
In his brief appearance, the 32-year-old forward registered six touches, completed three of four passes, and fired one shot off target. Known for his composure from the spot, Ayew’s miss ultimately shifted momentum to the Terriers, who took full advantage.
Fellow Ghanaian Abdul Fatawu Issahaku was an unused substitute for Leicester on the night, watching as his side exited the competition earlier than hoped.
