Hearts of Oak Earn German Showcase After Democracy Cup Triumph

Accra Hearts of Oak will soon trade the University of Ghana Stadium for European turf after clinching the 2025 Democracy Cup. The Phobians sealed the prestigious title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over archrivals Great Olympics on Friday, thanks to a 70th-minute strike from substitute Kwesi Asmah.

The triumph marked Hearts’ redemption following their loss to Asante Kotoko in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2024. This year’s success also comes with a special reward — a high-profile international friendly in Germany.

Confirming the development, Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, explained that the Democracy Cup tradition of offering winners an international fixture will continue.

“Definitely Germany. We’ve not ruled out the U.S. because last year we had the winning team playing D.C. United in Washington, D.C. This year, that opportunity still avails us, but we want to have an experience in Europe,” Djietror said.

The 2024 champions, Asante Kotoko, flew to the United States for their showcase against Major League Soccer side D.C. United. Organisers now believe shifting the stage to Europe will further elevate the Democracy Cup’s stature and spotlight the strength of Ghanaian club football globally.

The day’s festivities also featured a thrilling curtain-raiser, with Parliament’s football team edging the Judiciary 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw — a symbolic reminder of the tournament’s spirit of unity, democracy, and celebration through sport.
