In a significant shake-up to the global football schedule, FIFA has confirmed that there will be no international break in October 2026. The governing body says the move follows persistent complaints from clubs about the disruption caused by too many pauses early in the season.
Starting with the 2026-27 campaign, FIFA will introduce a single extended September window running from September 21 to October 6, allowing national teams to play up to four matches in one stretch. This adjustment is designed to replace the usual mid-October round of fixtures and reduce travel fatigue for players.
The November window remains unchanged, with two matches slated between November 9 and 17. The change also impacts Europe’s revamped Champions League, which will now kick off earlier, with opening matches scheduled between September 8 and 10.
FIFA believes the streamlined calendar will strike a better balance between club and international football, easing tension between national associations and elite clubs while keeping fans engaged through fewer interruptions.
