Super Eagles defender Ola Aina is set for a spell on the sidelines after undergoing successful surgery on a hamstring injury sustained during Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana last week.
The 28-year-old Nottingham Forest full-back, known for his versatility, is expected to be out of action for approximately three months. Despite the setback, Aina is aiming to return in time for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which Morocco will host in December.
His absence will be felt by the Nigerian national team, as he is now ruled out of next month’s World Cup qualifying clashes against Lesotho’s Crocodiles and Benin Republic’s Squirrels.
At club level, Aina has been temporarily removed from Nottingham Forest’s Premier League squad to allow for his recovery. The club confirmed that fellow Super Eagles star Taiwo Awoniyi has taken his place, though Aina can be re-registered after the winter transfer window.
Despite the injury, Aina remains optimistic about his comeback, focusing on rehabilitation and a strong return for both club and country.
