From AFCON Heartbreak to World Cup Hope: Desabre Refocuses DR Congo on 2026 Playoff

Fresh from the disappointment of their AFCON 2025 exit, DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has wasted no time in redirecting attention toward a far bigger prize—the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Leopards’ continental journey came to a painful end in the Round of 16 after a hard-fought defeat to African giants Algeria. The encounter lived up to its billing, remaining goalless after 90 intense minutes before stretching into extra time. Just moments from a penalty shootout, substitute Adel Boulbina struck a thunderous effort in the 118th minute, sealing a narrow 1–0 victory for the North Africans and denying DR Congo a place in the quarter-finals.

While Algeria now march on to face Nigeria in the last eight, Desabre has chosen reflection over regret. Speaking after the match, the French tactician praised his players’ commitment and resilience despite the crushing outcome.

“We are disappointed with the loss to Algeria. The match was great, and my team fought until the last minute, but it wasn’t enough,” Desabre said.
“Algeria’s goal came from a decisive rebound, and I have nothing to blame the players for. We must now study the shortcomings and draw lessons before the World Cup play-off qualifiers next March.”

Those lessons could prove vital. DR Congo remain firmly in contention for a historic World Cup appearance after earning a place in the intercontinental playoff. The Leopards booked that opportunity in November 2025, overcoming Nigeria in the African playoff finals to move within touching distance of football’s grandest stage.

Now, just one final hurdle stands in their way. Desabre’s side will face the winner of the playoff clash between Jamaica and New Caledonia, with a World Cup ticket awaiting the victor.

For DR Congo, AFCON disappointment has quickly transformed into renewed determination. The dream is still alive—and March 2026 could define a generation.
