As the 13th African Games, also known as Accra 2023, draw near, boxing stands out as the beacon of hope for Ghana’s medal aspirations. Throughout past African Games and Olympic competitions, Ghanaian boxers have consistently delivered commendable performances, securing spots in the coveted medal zone.
With the upcoming Games taking place on home soil, the Black Bombers and Black Hitters (the female squad) are gearing up for a significant opportunity to shine before familiar faces, fans, family, and friends. The preparation for these fighters has been arduous, with a three-month non-residential training camp at the Accra Sports Stadium, followed by a month in Cape Coast, providing a positive psychological boost with a change of environment.
Now, the boxers will reside in the Games Village at the University of Ghana’s campuses from February 12th, 2024. The highly anticipated boxing events are set to unfold at the Bukom Boxing Arena, where enthusiastic fans are expected to fill the stands and rally behind their national heroes.
The African Games will serve as a prelude to other international competitions, notably the first World Qualifying Tournament Boxing Road to Paris in Busto Arsizio, Italy (March 4 – 11, 2024). Accra 2023, the 13th African Games, is scheduled to take place from March 15th to 23rd, 2024.
Team Ghana boasts the inclusion of Tokyo 2020 Bronze medalist Samuel Takyi, now competing in the Light Welterweight -63.5Kg category, along with other skilled boxers. The team, featuring seven male and two female boxers, will also participate in the Italy qualifiers, reinforcing Ghana’s presence on the global boxing stage.
With promising talents like Theo Allotey and Abu Kamoko, son of the renowned Bukom Banku, expressing their commitment to winning medals, experienced campaigners like Abdul Wahid Omar believe that competing before a home crowd will fuel their drive to reach the coveted medals zone.
Observing the confidence and courage exhibited by the boxers and their coaches, it is evident that they feel well-prepared and ready for the challenges ahead. As the boxing contingent sets its sights on the finals, Yours Truly extends best wishes for their success, urging massive support from the Ghanaian community.
Coach Dr. Ofori Asare emphasized that the team is prepared and eager to make their mark, calling for unwavering support from the nation.
