On the 23rd anniversary of the tragic May 9 disaster, Herbert Mensah, President of the May 9 Foundation, has emphasized the need for proactive steps to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The incident, which claimed the lives of over 120 football fans during a match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, remains a poignant reminder of the consequences of violence in sports.
Mensah, a former CEO of Asante Kotoko, highlighted the importance of setting a benchmark to ensure such incidents never happen again. In a statement released to commemorate the anniversary, he emphasized the symbolic significance of May 9 and stressed the urgency of addressing violence at sporting events.
“May 9 has become symbolic of so many things. The critical situation is that we should at least set a benchmark for this sort of thing to never happen again,” Mensah stated. He also acknowledged the broader issue of violence in sports, reaffirming his commitment to supporting efforts to address it.
As the sporting community reflects on the tragedy of May 9, Mensah’s call for preventative measures serves as a reminder of the importance of promoting safety and security in sports environments.
