Denmark secured a confident start in Group B of the 2024 European U17 Championship with a 2-0 victory over Wales at Dasaki Stadium, Achna on Monday, thanks to goals on either side of halftime.
Chido Obi-Martin, Arsenal’s young striker, entered his first major tournament for Denmark in impressive form, having scored 32 goals from eighteen appearances in the 2023-2024 U18 Premier League season. The 16-year-old broke Folarin Balogun’s record for the most goals in a season by an Arsenal player in the U18 league while still attending school.
In the dying moments of the first half, Obi-Martin broke the deadlock in stoppage time, rounding the Wales goalkeeper and calmly slotting the ball into the net after a precise through ball from Noah Markmann.
Early in the second half, Denmark extended their lead with Sofus Johannesen heading home after capitalizing on a defensive clearance.
Obi-Martin, who made his debut for Denmark’s U17 national team against Norway in August 2023, has now scored eleven goals in fifteen appearances for the youth side.
The former FC Copenhagen youth player aims to follow in the footsteps of Nigerian descent players like Victor Moses and Dominic Solanke, who won the Golden Boot at the European U17 Championship in 2007 and 2014, respectively.
