Finidi George Expresses His Only Regret: Not Signing for Real Madrid

Former Ajax player Finidi George, now appointed as the head coach of the Super Eagles, recently disclosed his sole regret from his playing days—missing out on a move to Real Madrid, as reported by Sportblog247.com.

After a successful spell at Ajax FC, George moved to Real Betis in Spain for 1,024 million pesetas. However, before joining Betis, the Nigerian international came close to signing with Real Madrid, a deal that ultimately fell through.

Reflecting on this missed opportunity, George expressed disappointment, attributing the breakdown to financial challenges between Real Madrid and Ajax, despite having agreed on personal terms with the Spanish club.

“My only regret is not signing for Real Madrid. The Real Madrid of today is different from 25 years ago. Back then, they faced financial difficulties and couldn’t finalize the transfer with Ajax. I had already agreed on terms and spoken with Coach Capello. There was a pre-contract, but the clubs couldn’t agree on the transfer fee,” he revealed during an interview on Brila FM.

George, who enjoyed a decorated playing career including a UEFA Champions League title, now transitions to coaching, tasked with leading Nigeria’s national team to future successes.
