Deputy Minister and GOC President to Support Black Bombers at World Qualifiers in Bangkok

Hon. Evans Opoku Bobie, Deputy Minister of Youth & Sports, along with the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, are set to travel to Bangkok, Thailand. Their mission is to oversee and motivate the Black Bombers as they compete in the final World Qualifiers, aiming to secure spots for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Boxing is Ghana’s most promising sport for medal success in major international competitions. Historically, Ghana has won four out of its total five Olympic medals in boxing. The notable medalists include Clement Ike Quartey (Silver, Light Welterweight, Rome 1960), Eddie Blay (Bronze, Light Welterweight, Tokyo 1964), Prince Amartey (Bronze, Middleweight, Munich 1972), and Samuel Takyi (Bronze, Featherweight, Tokyo 2020).

The seven boxers representing Ghana in the qualifiers are:

  • Ornella Sathoud (Women’s Middleweight, 75kg), based in the USA
  • Mark Kodjovi Ahondjo (Super Heavyweight, 92kg+), based in Leicester, UK
  • Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey (Flyweight, 51kg), based in Accra
  • Amadu Mohammed (Featherweight, 57kg)
  • Joseph Commey (Light Welterweight, 63.5kg)
  • Henry Malm (Light Middleweight, 71kg)
  • Jonathan Tetteh (Light Heavyweight)

The team is led by Dauda Fuseni, First Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), and supported by a technical crew consisting of Head Coach Ofori Asare, Assistant Coaches Vincent Akai Nettey and Elvis Robertson, Team Doctor Edward Asante, and Physiotherapist/Masseur Daniel Quartey.

The second World Qualifying Tournament is being held in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 25 to June 2, 2024, at the Indoor Stadium. A total of 51 slots are available (28 for men and 23 for women).
