Dutch-Ghanaian footballer Memphis Depay has written a heartfelt farewell message to Atletico Madrid, announcing his departure following the expiration of his contract. Depay and the club mutually decided not to extend his contract after an 18-month stint in the Spanish capital.

Depay joined Atletico Madrid from Barcelona in January 2023 and quickly became an integral part of Diego Simeone’s team. However, his contract concludes on June 30, and he will be available for a free transfer.

Expressing his emotions on X (formerly Twitter), Depay wrote, “It’s not easy to say how I feel about writing this message because I feel that things could’ve been very different. Maybe it’s better to keep that conversation for another time.”

He continued, “To Atletico Madrid, my teammates, the staff, and especially the fans, I want to thank you for the energy and support I’ve experienced during my time as an Atleti player. I keep the good memories close to my heart. Gracias. Aupa Atleti!”

Born to Ghanaian parents in Mordrecht, Depay often vacations in Ghana. He is currently with the Dutch national team, preparing for the European Championship in Germany this summer.
