Finidi George Resigns as Super Eagles Head Coach

Former Enyimba International coach Finidi George has stepped down from his role as head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Sportblog247.com reports.

Finidi, a celebrated right-winger during his playing days, won the 1994 AFCON with Nigeria and also clinched the UEFA Champions League and Super Cup titles with Ajax. After a stint in Spain, he returned to the Nigeria Professional Football League, leading Enyimba to a league title in his second season.

He initially worked as an assistant under former Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro. Following the AFCON tournament, Peseiro’s contract was not renewed, and Finidi took over on an interim basis during the March international break. Under his guidance, the team secured a 2-1 victory over Ghana but later suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mali in Morocco.

Last month, after a comprehensive meeting with the Nigerian Football Federation, Finidi was appointed head coach of the Super Eagles. He was tasked with qualifying the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, in the qualifiers, the Super Eagles managed only a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo and lost to Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic in Ivory Coast, leaving them fifth in their qualification group with three points from four games.

Reports indicate that Finidi has resigned following the hiring of a foreign technical adviser by the Nigerian Football Federation.
