Former Super Eagles and Real Madrid midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has expressed his openness to coaching Nigeria’s national team following Finidi George’s resignation, according to Sportblog247.com.
Adepoju, 53, was scouted during the 1989 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where he impressed with Nigeria’s Flying Eagles. He subsequently joined Real Madrid, spending three years with Los Blancos and scoring 27 goals in 67 games for their B team, Real Madrid Castilla, helping them win the Segunda División B title. Despite his achievements, he never played for the senior team due to the foreign player quota.
In a recent interview on the Managing Madrid podcast, Adepoju, who holds a UEFA Pro Coaching License, expressed his willingness to take on the coaching role for the Super Eagles.
“We had several players in the Castilla team who are brilliant coaches today, and we didn’t see it at the time. I have a UEFA Pro license myself, so if there’s an opportunity, I wouldn’t mind. I’m open. I once coached Shooting Stars in Nigeria, but I haven’t coached since then,” said the 1994 AFCON winner.
After leaving Real Madrid, Adepoju spent most of his football career in Spain, playing for Racing Santander and Real Sociedad. He also had a brief stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad and later played in Turkey for Samsunspor. Before retiring in 2006, Adepoju had a short spell with AEL Limassol in Cyprus, concluding an 18-year professional career.
