Ghana coach Otto Addo has highlighted the critical need for proper stadium maintenance in the country, following concerns over the conditions of facilities ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan.
Ghana narrowly avoided playing the match abroad after CAF initially banned the Baba Yara Stadium due to poor pitch conditions. The National Sports Authority (NSA) responded by closing down all major stadiums, including the Accra Sports Stadium, for urgent renovations to secure late approval for the game.
Reflecting on the situation, Addo stated, “I don’t know what has been done. I can just talk about Accra because obviously we’re here, and they did well. It’s difficult for me to talk about things I can’t control, like renovations, but I’m happy we can play this match at home.”
Addo expressed relief that the team will play in Accra, hoping for strong fan support despite the recent challenges. “I’m happy that we’re here, at home, and hopefully we get the support from all the spectators,” he said, acknowledging that there may be difficulties but remaining optimistic about a positive result.
The crucial match against Sudan is scheduled for a 4 pm local time kickoff.
