Benin are now within touching distance of making history, after a gritty 1–0 triumph over Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup dream burning bright.
The evening’s hero was none other than Nigerian-born striker Aiyegun Tosin, whose late strike in the 80th minute sealed all three points for the Cheetahs. Playing for French Ligue 1 side Lorient, Tosin showed poise and precision — pouncing on a rare defensive mistake from the Rwandan backline to fire Benin two points clear at the top of CAF Group C.
Rwanda had their chances, with their best moment coming from a dangerous free-kick late in the first half, but their finishing let them down. As the final whistle blew, Benin’s bench erupted in joy — they now stand just one game away from a maiden World Cup appearance.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Super Eagles, led by Victor Osimhen, remain mathematically in contention after holding off Lesotho earlier in the day. All eyes now turn to Uyo, where Benin will face Nigeria in a high-stakes final clash that could decide who soars to North America in 2026 — and who crashes out in heartbreak.

It was meant to be a night of celebration in Durban — a statement performance to keep South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup dream alive. Instead, Bafana Bafana were left deflated, as 10-man Zimbabwe stubbornly held them to a goalless draw at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Hugo Broos’s men dominated possession, launched wave after wave of attacks, and kept the crowd on its feet. Yet, the goal they so desperately needed never came. The ball teased, twisted, and tormented — but it refused to cross the line.
Early on, the signs were promising. The youthful pace of Mohau Nkota and Oswin Appollis stretched Zimbabwe’s defence, creating space and excitement. But as the minutes ticked away, frustration replaced optimism, and what could have been a party turned into a night of regret.
The 0–0 result dents Bafana Bafana’s qualification momentum, leaving fans wondering where the spark went — and whether their World Cup dream might need a miracle after all.

Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has shared a hilarious story from his Premier League days under veteran English manager Harry Redknapp, revealing how he narrowly missed out on a $20,000 reward from his boss.
According to the ex-Portsmouth and Everton forward, Redknapp had promised him $20,000 if he could reach 20 goals by the end of the season. With Yakubu sitting on 15 goals going into the final matchday, the Nigerian striker produced a remarkable performance — scoring four times to bring his tally to 19 goals, just one shy of the target.
After the match, Yakubu recalled feeling slightly disappointed despite his heroics. Redknapp, noticing his mood, asked what was wrong. When Yakubu reminded him of the bet, the English coach burst out laughing and jokingly said:
> “I forgot about that — I should have subbed you off earlier!”
Though he missed out on the cash prize, the moment remains one of Yakubu’s fondest — and funniest — memories from his time in English football, showcasing both his goalscoring instinct and his manager’s cheeky sense of humor.

Football’s biggest spectacle is heading to the Middle East once again — but with a twist. The 2034 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted by Saudi Arabia, might not actually take place in 2034 as planned.
According to emerging reports, the tournament could be pushed into early 2035, marking a rare shift in the global football calendar. The decision comes as FIFA and local organizers seek to avoid scheduling conflicts with Ramadan, which will fall in March and April 2034.
Much like the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which was staged in the winter to escape the region’s blistering summer heat, Saudi Arabia’s edition will also take place during the cooler months. However, instead of the traditional November–December window, officials are eyeing a January–February 2035 kickoff to accommodate cultural and climatic conditions.
The potential move highlights FIFA’s growing flexibility in adapting football’s biggest tournament to new environments — and Saudi Arabia’s ambition to deliver a unique World Cup experience.
Fans around the globe now await official confirmation from FIFA on what could be the first-ever World Cup staged in a different calendar year than its original designation.

It’s a bitter blow for Kumasi Asante Kotoko and their passionate supporters as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially rejected the club’s request to use the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for their upcoming CAF Confederation Cup second round first-leg tie against Moroccan giants, Wydad Athletic Club.
This means the Porcupine Warriors will have to trade their beloved Kumasi fortress for the Accra Sports Stadium when they face Wydad on Sunday, October 19, at 15:00 GMT.
The decision, which comes as a disappointment to the club and fans, follows CAF’s latest inspection report that deemed the Baba Yara Stadium below the required standards to host matches of such magnitude.
> “Management regrettably announces that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has declined the approval of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to host Kotoko’s CAF Confederation Cup clash against Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco,” the club confirmed in an official statement.
With Bibiani Gold Stars bowing out early from the CAF Champions League, Kotoko remains Ghana’s sole representative on the continental stage. Their journey so far has been commendable — edging out Nigeria’s Kwara United to secure a second-round berth.
Domestically, Kotoko are enjoying a solid start to the Ghana Premier League, boasting two wins and a draw in their first three games. They will, however, have to refocus quickly as they prepare for a derby showdown with Nations FC on Saturday, October 11, before shifting their attention to the crucial continental duel against Wydad.
Now, without the home comfort of the Baba Yara faithful, Kotoko face an even bigger challenge — to defend Ghana’s pride away from their fortress and prove that true warriors can triumph anywhere.
