Manu Garba Calls for More WAFU B Slots After Golden Eaglets’ AFCON Miss

Manu Garba Calls for More WAFU B Slots After Golden Eaglets’ AFCON Miss

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will not feature at the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations after their semi-final defeat to Ghana in Côte d’Ivoire, and head coach Manu Garba is calling for change.

The Eaglets fell 2-0 to the Black Starlets, a result that ended not just their AFCON dreams but also their chance to play at the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which has now become an annual tournament.

Garba, who guided Nigeria to U-17 World Cup glory in 2013, voiced frustration with the current qualification system. He argued that WAFU Zone B — often considered the strongest region in African youth football — deserves more than the two slots it currently receives.

“WAFU B is the toughest region in Africa when it comes to youth football. We started with just one slot, then it was increased to two, but that’s still not enough,” Garba lamented. “Nigeria has won the U-17 World Cup five times, the most in history. It’s unfair for such a competitive region to keep getting limited slots, while other zones enjoy more representation.”

The veteran coach urged CAF to review the allocation system, stressing that restricting WAFU B harms the development of top youth talent across West Africa.

Super Eagles Line Up Venezuela & Colombia Friendlies Ahead of AFCON 2025

Super Eagles Line Up Venezuela & Colombia Friendlies Ahead of AFCON 2025

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that the Super Eagles will test their strength against Venezuela and Colombia in two international friendlies as they fine-tune preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Both matches are scheduled for the United States during the FIFA international window in November 2025, just a month before AFCON kicks off.

Before then, Nigeria will complete their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with crucial fixtures against Lesotho (October 10, away) and Benin (October 14, home).

According to the NFF, José Peseiro’s men will first clash with Venezuela on Friday, November 14 at the Shell Stadium in Houston, Texas (8pm local time), before facing Colombia on Tuesday, November 18 at Citi Field Stadium in New York (8pm Eastern Time, 1am Nigeria time, November 19).

The upcoming U.S. tour will mark Nigeria’s return to American soil after their narrow 2-1 defeat to Mexico in Dallas back in 2022, when Cyriel Dessers scored his debut goal under then-new coach Peseiro.

Nigeria’s AFCON campaign begins in Group C, where the three-time champions will square off against Tanzania (Dec 23), Tunisia (Dec 27), and Uganda (Dec 30).

⚽ FIFA Expands Club World Cup Format: More Teams, More Chances!

⚽ FIFA Expands Club World Cup Format: More Teams, More Chances!

FIFA is set to shake up the Club World Cup with a major change that could redefine the competition. The governing body has now raised the limit of participating clubs from a single country from two to three.

This means that if, for example, a nation produces two CAF Champions League winners during the qualification cycle, there will still be room for another team from the same country via the ranking system.

But that’s not all—the tournament could now grow to a massive 48-club showdown, ensuring that no champion from the world’s biggest leagues is left behind. This adjustment comes in response to the first edition, where several deserving league champions missed out.

With these changes, the Club World Cup is gearing up to become an even bigger stage for global football glory. ⚽
