Ghana’s women’s table tennis team has taken a giant leap forward, earning qualification for the 2025 ITTF African Championships in Tunis, Tunisia, scheduled for October 12–19.
Their ticket to the continental stage came after a brilliant run at the 2025 West African Regional Championships in Nigeria, where the team fought their way to a bronze medal finish. That podium spot secured Ghana one of just three women’s qualification slots, joining regional powerhouses Nigeria and Benin.
The African Championships will not only gather the continent’s top talents but also serve as the gateway to the 2026 World Table Tennis Championships in London — making Ghana’s breakthrough even more significant.
For Ghana, this moment represents more than just qualification. It is proof of the rising strength and resilience of its women’s side, who are now set to carry the nation’s hopes onto one of Africa’s biggest sporting stages.
With weeks to go, anticipation is building as the Ghanaian ladies prepare to test themselves against the continent’s elite — with the dream of London 2026 pushing them every step of the way.

Ghana’s rising star Jennifer Awuku is set to shine on an even bigger stage after being selected as one of the ball kids for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The 15-year-old forward captured the spotlight earlier this year when she was named Best Player at the CAF African Schools Football Championship, held at the University of Ghana Stadium in April. Her standout performances powered Ghana’s U-15 Girls to their maiden title, with Awuku scoring the team’s opening goal of the tournament.
Now a member of Women’s Premier League giants Hasaacas Ladies, Jennifer’s journey represents the success of CAF’s youth development drive. She will be joined by Senegal’s Souleymane Faye, another standout from the schools’ competition, as the two serve at Africa’s biggest football spectacle.
The initiative, spearheaded by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, underscores a commitment to nurturing Africa’s young talents — not just through competition but also via opportunities for cultural exchange and leadership growth.
For Jennifer, the AFCON call-up is not only an honor but also a symbol of hope for young footballers across the continent dreaming of greatness.

Mali’s hopes of reaching their first-ever FIFA World Cup suffered a devastating blow on Monday night in Accra, as head coach Tom Saintfiet admitted that automatic qualification for the 2026 finals is now out of reach.
The Eagles fell 1-0 to Ghana after Alexander Djiku pounced on a spilled corner from goalkeeper Djigui Diarra just four minutes into the second half. Despite dominating the final stages of the match, Mali failed to breach Otto Addo’s disciplined Black Stars defence.
The result restores Ghana’s three-point cushion at the top of Group I, moving them to 19 points with only two games left to play. For Mali, however, the defeat proved fatal to their chances of catching up.
“Our chances to win the group are over because we are seven points behind, and in two games seven points will not happen. To become second will also be difficult,” a disappointed Saintfiet admitted after the game.
Mali, seeded top in the African qualifiers and still searching for a maiden World Cup appearance, now sit fourth in the group, four points behind second-placed Madagascar. Earlier in the day, the Malagasy came from behind to beat Chad 3-1 with goals from Warren Caddy, Rayan Raveloson and Hakim Abdallah.
Elsewhere, Comoros tightened the race for second spot by defeating the Central African Republic 2-0, keeping themselves just a point adrift of Madagascar.
For the Eagles, though, it was a night of bitter disappointment and fading dreams.

Senegal have etched their name in football’s record books as the most consistent national team in the world right now. The Teranga Lions are currently enjoying a remarkable 24-match unbeaten streak, the longest of any nation on the planet.
Chasing closely behind are Spain and South Africa, who have both managed to stay undefeated in their last 22 matches, showcasing their resilience on the global stage. Morocco, Africa’s World Cup semi-finalists, are also making waves with a 16-game unbeaten run, while South Korea complete the top five with 15 matches without defeat.
This impressive run highlights Senegal’s dominance and stability under coach Aliou Cissé, proving why they remain one of the most feared sides in world football.

When Hugo Broos looks at Nigeria’s national team, he sees a squad full of players plying their trade in Europe’s biggest leagues—Serie A with Atalanta and AC Milan, the Premier League with Fulham, and many more.
By contrast, South Africa doesn’t boast such star-studded résumés. Most of Bafana Bafana’s players still compete locally, without the glitter of Europe’s elite football.
But for Broos, that’s not a disadvantage. Instead, he believes it’s a strength. His philosophy is simple: a team’s fight, chemistry, and hunger can bridge the gap against Nigeria’s individual brilliance.
It’s the classic tale of David versus Goliath—and Broos insists his men have what it takes to rise to the challenge.
