In 2009, Ghana’s Black Satellites achieved what no African side had ever done before — winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup. And at the centre of that golden moment was a young striker whose name lit up the tournament: Dominic Adiyiah.
With eight goals to his name, Adiyiah claimed both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball, cementing his status as the best player in the competition. His electric pace, lethal finishing, and instinct for goal fired Ghana to glory in a nail-biting penalty shootout against Brazil — a victory that echoed across Africa and announced the continent’s youth football power to the world.
Soon after, the fairytale chapter began. European giants AC Milan came knocking, and the teenage sensation signed for the 7-time UEFA Champions League winners. For Ghanaian fans, it felt like destiny — their U-20 hero stepping onto the hallowed San Siro turf alongside icons like Alexandre Pato, Filippo Inzaghi, and Zlatan Ibrahimović.
But the dream quickly soured. Adiyiah never played a single competitive match for Milan during his two-year spell, spending his time on a string of loan moves that never truly reignited his U-20 magic.
In 2012, he sought stability in Ukraine with Arsenal Kyiv, signing a three-year deal and finally getting regular minutes. Later, brief stints in Kazakhstan and Thailand followed, as his career journeyed far from the bright lights of Cairo 2009.
For many in Ghana, Adiyiah’s story remains one of what could have been. Some blame a lack of opportunity, others point to the ill-fated Milan move — but all remember the night he stood atop the football world, carrying African pride on his young shoulders.

Black Stars skipper Jordan Ayew delivered a commanding performance as Leicester City kicked off their Championship campaign with a 2-1 comeback win over Sheffield Wednesday.
The match at the King Power Stadium started with a shock for the Foxes, as Nathaniel Chalobah put the visitors ahead early on. Leicester clawed their way back into the game after the break, with Jannik Vestergaard nodding in the equaliser in the 51st minute. The winner came late, as Wout Faes rose highest to head home in the 87th minute, sealing all three points.
The Owls’ hopes of snatching a draw were dealt a blow when captain Barry Bannan received his marching orders with just 14 minutes remaining.
Ayew, who has been in fine form throughout pre-season — including a stunning goal directly from a corner against OH Leuven — was instrumental once again. He linked up play superbly, created two big chances, completed two successful dribbles, and fired seven shots (three on target) across the 90 minutes. His work rate and creativity kept Leicester’s attack ticking until the final whistle.

It was a night of drama and determination at the Mandela National Stadium as CHAN 2024’s Group C picture began to take shape.
In the day’s opener, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana kept their unbeaten run intact and their title hopes burning with a 2-1 win over Guinea. Neo Maema gave them the perfect start with a 7th-minute strike, but Guinea fought back as Moussa Camara levelled in the 37th minute. The decisive blow came just nine minutes into the second half, when Thabiso Kutumela struck to secure a vital three points for Molefi Ntseki’s side — pulling them level with Algeria in the race for quarter-final spots.
Later in the evening, co-hosts Uganda sent their home fans into jubilation, making it two wins from two with a 2-0 triumph over Niger. Allan Okello opened the scoring in the 25th minute, and Joel Sserunjogi sealed the victory in the 56th, propelling The Cranes to the top of the table on six points — two clear of both Algeria and South Africa.

The iconic Accra Sports Stadium has been handed a conditional lifeline by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), earning the green light to host key continental club fixtures next month.
Despite falling short of CAF’s full infrastructure standards, the venue has been granted provisional approval as Ghana’s sole facility for the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.
This means local fans can brace themselves for two high-stakes encounters on home soil — Asante Kotoko’s Champions League qualifier against Nigeria’s Kwara United, and Ghana Premier League champions Bibiani GoldStars’ Confederation Cup showdown with Algeria’s JS Kabylie.
The decision spares Ghanaian clubs the costly and disruptive alternative of seeking neutral venues abroad. However, CAF’s temporary pass is a reminder that the stadium’s shortcomings still loom over future continental campaigns. For now, though, Accra will be the heartbeat of Ghana’s African football ambitions in September.

The African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 is reaching a critical stage for Group D, and the stakes couldn’t be higher for Nigeria.
The Super Eagles, still searching for their first points, will be fighting for survival when they face Sudan at the Amaan Stadium this Tuesday evening. After a narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal in their opener, Nigeria sit bottom of the group and know that anything less than a win could spell early elimination.
Earlier in the day, Senegal will aim to punch their ticket to the quarter-finals when they meet Congo at 16:00. The Lions of Teranga started their title defence with that hard-fought victory over Nigeria, while Congo are chasing their first win after a 1-1 draw against Sudan.
With only two games gone, Group D already feels like a battlefield — and for Nigeria, it’s do-or-die under the Zanzibar City lights at 19:00.
