Racing Genk’s 2024/25 campaign promised so much but has ended in heartache, and no one feels the sting more than Nigeria’s rising striker, Tolu Arokodare. The 24-year-old has been one of the shining lights in a turbulent season, netting 22 goals and contributing seven assists under manager Thorsten Fink. Yet, despite his heroics, Genk’s title challenge has faltered at the final hurdle.
Genk led the Belgian Pro League for most of the regular season, only to unravel in the Championship Play-Offs. A run of five winless games has left the Smurfs six points behind leaders Union Saint-Gilloise and five adrift of Club Brugge with just three games remaining.
“It’s painful,” Arokodare admitted in an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws. “We had a great season, and then suddenly it’s one-goal losses, penalties, red cards… It hurts.”
Still, the Super Eagles forward remains fiercely proud of his team:
“Every player has played a fantastic season. The coach has been brilliant. The fans? Amazing. People don’t see how much we’ve grown.”
With a key fixture against Club Brugge looming, Genk have one last shot at redemption — and a potential leap into second place. Arokodare is not giving up just yet.
“You beat them, and anything’s possible. It’s not over,” he declared. “We’ve lost to them more often, but I still believe Genk are the best team in Belgium. We have the best goalkeeper, the best defence, the best provider, and — without bragging — I’m the league’s top scorer. That says enough.”
Despite the disappointment, Arokodare’s stock has soared. Having made his Super Eagles debut in March, he’s now linked with a move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich — potentially as backup to Harry Kane.
“I’ve heard the rumours,” he smiled. “Being a stand-in for Kane? That would be nice. It’s just talk now — I haven’t had contact — but if the train comes, I have to be ready.”
His previous stint in Germany with FC Cologne didn’t go to plan — he failed to score — but Arokodare is a different player now. Matured, motivated, and hungry for the next challenge.
As the season winds down, Tolu Arokodare is already looking forward. With talent, self-belief, and unfinished business, the Nigerian forward’s journey may just be getting started.

Fresh off international duty, Ghanaian starlet Jerry Afriyie made a stunning return to club football, inspiring CD Lugo to a dramatic 2-2 draw against Gimnàstic at the Nou Estadi Costa Daurada.
The 18-year-old forward had just completed two matches with the Black Satellites at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt before rejoining Lugo under a special agreement between the club and the Ghana Football Association. Despite arriving less than 48 hours before the match, Afriyie was thrown straight into the starting lineup—and he didn’t disappoint.
Gimnàstic took early control of the match, opening the scoring in the 28th minute through Antoñín. Joan Oriol added a second just before halftime, putting Lugo in a difficult position.
But the second half belonged to Jerry Afriyie. The teenager sparked a spirited comeback when he assisted Lizancos with just 23 minutes remaining. Then, in the dying moments of the match, Afriyie capped off a Man of the Match performance with a dramatic injury-time equalizer.
His latest heroics take his tally to three goals and two assists in just eight league appearances—a remarkable feat for a player still in his teens.
Afriyie’s performance has further cemented his status as one of Ghana’s brightest young talents and a rising force in European football.

After a dominant run in Group C, Ghana’s Black Satellites are now just one win away from securing a coveted spot at the FIFA U20 World Cup. The former world champions will face host nation Egypt in a high-stakes quarterfinal at the ongoing U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana topped their group with seven points, registering two victories and a draw. Though their goal tally stood at three in as many games, the team’s solid defense conceded only once — a testament to their tactical discipline and resilience.
Their next challenge is formidable: an Egyptian side bolstered by home support, who finished third in Group A and are equally hungry for a semi-final berth — and a ticket to the global stage in Chile this September.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. Victory not only guarantees a place in the last four of the continental championship but also secures a return to the U20 World Cup, a tournament Ghana last graced in 2015. The Black Satellites, champions of the world in 2009, will be hoping to rewrite their legacy and reestablish themselves among the elite of youth football.

Ghanaian winger Winfred Amoah delivered another impressive display for SKN St. Pölten, registering a crucial assist in their 3-1 victory over SW Bregenz on Friday afternoon in the Austrian 2. Liga.
Amoah, who started the match and played 73 minutes, was instrumental in setting the tone for the Wolves’ dominant first-half performance. After a cautious opening, the 23-year-old broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, curling in a precise cross that Claudy M’Buyi expertly headed home for the opener.
The attacking momentum continued, and M’Buyi doubled his tally in the 39th minute, this time connecting with Christoph Messerer’s delivery to give St. Pölten a 2-0 halftime lead.
Although a sloppy back pass gifted SW Bregenz a lifeline in the 79th minute through Burak Ergin, any hopes of a comeback were dashed just five minutes later. Substitute Elijah Just sealed the win with a brilliant solo effort, restoring the hosts’ two-goal cushion.
Amoah’s assist brings his season total to seven, adding to his four goals in 26 league appearances—further evidence of his growing influence at the club.
SKN St. Pölten will aim to build on this strong performance when they face Rapid Wien II on May 16.

Ghanaian forward Raymond Owusu was on the scoresheet for SV Horn, but his early strike wasn’t enough to secure victory as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Floridsdorfer AC in a crucial Austrian Bundesliga 2 encounter on Friday afternoon.
Owusu gave Horn the lead in the 23rd minute, calmly finishing off a clever pass from Karim Conté. The 22-year-old looked sharp throughout his 62-minute shift, consistently troubling the FAC defence with his pace and movement. Fellow Ghanaian, Ekué Prince Amoah, also impressed, earning applause from the Horn faithful.
Horn took a narrow lead into halftime, but Floridsdorfer came out stronger after the break, making key changes. Their persistence paid off in the 55th minute when Mirnes Becirovic converted from a well-worked corner to level the match.
Despite a late red card for FAC substitute Efekan Karayazi in the 85th minute, Horn couldn’t find a winner. The draw mathematically confirms SV Horn’s relegation in sporting terms, as they remain seven points behind safety with only two matches left to play.
SV Horn will look to restore some pride when they visit Kapfenberger SV on May 16 for their penultimate fixture of the season.
