After a remarkable return from a career-threatening injury, Nigerian striker Rafiu Durosinmi is now at the center of a heated transfer battle between Turkish giants Besiktas and Italian side Lazio.

On the other hand, Lazio presents a chance to play in one of Europe’s top five leagues. Former Super Eagles coach Johannes Bonfrère has criticized Nigeria’s disappointing performance after a frustrating 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
Bonfrère, who was part of Nigeria’s coaching team during the country’s golden era—winning the 1994 AFCON, securing Olympic gold in 1996, and qualifying for their first World Cup—expressed disbelief at how far the team has fallen.
Speaking to Complete Sports from his home in the Netherlands, the Dutchman questioned the team’s ability to secure World Cup qualification if they continue to drop points against weaker opponents.
“How do you expect to qualify if you don’t win games?” Bonfrère asked pointedly. “In the past, if we didn’t beat Zimbabwe 3-0 or 4-0, the fans would throw stones at us. With so many Super Eagles players in top European leagues, a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe is unacceptable.”
Despite Victor Osimhen’s second-half goal raising hopes of a much-needed victory, a late equalizer from Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa dashed Nigeria’s chances, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
Bonfrère also questioned the team’s tactical approach and lack of clinical finishing. “Did the coach have enough information on Zimbabwe? Did he use the wrong tactics? Or did the players fail to execute the plan? If the attackers had finished their chances, Zimbabwe’s goal wouldn’t have mattered.”
The result leaves Nigeria in fourth place in Group C with seven points—six points behind leaders South Africa—making automatic qualification increasingly uncertain with only four matches remaining.

Manchester United’s rising star, Patrick Dorgu, has taken a significant step to honour his Nigerian heritage by officially adding ‘Chinazaekpere’ to his name. The 20-year-old defender, now recognised as Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, requested the club to update all records to reflect his full identity.
Dorgu, who joined United from Italian side Lecce for £25 million in January, made the decision to acknowledge his deep connection to Nigeria, the birthplace of both his parents. The name ‘Chinazaekpere,’ of Igbo origin, translates to ‘God answers prayers,’ reflecting his faith and cultural pride.
Manchester United swiftly honoured Dorgu’s request, updating his profile on the club’s website and matchday programme. His full name will now appear on official squad lists and team sheets moving forward.
Since arriving at Old Trafford, Dorgu has become a vital part of Rúben Amorim’s defensive setup. Despite serving a three-match suspension following a red card in United’s thrilling 3-2 win over Ipswich Town, he is poised to return for the upcoming clash against Nottingham Forest.
Dorgu’s football journey began in Denmark, where he progressed through the youth system at Nordsjaelland before making a name for himself in Serie A with Lecce. Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr remains optimistic about Nigeria and Benin Republic’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup despite South Africa’s commanding position in Group C.
Rohr, who now leads Benin’s national team, believes both countries could benefit from potential disciplinary action against South Africa. Reports suggest that Bafana Bafana may face a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player during their Matchday 5 victory over Lesotho.
“Both Benin and Nigeria will have a chance if South Africa lose three points for playing a player who is suspended,” Rohr stated confidently.
As it stands, South Africa lead Group C with 13 points after six matches, followed by Rwanda with eight points and Benin in third, also with eight points but an inferior goal difference. Nigeria sit fourth with seven points, while Lesotho and Zimbabwe are fifth and sixth with six and four points, respectively.
If FIFA enforces a points deduction, Lesotho would gain three points, moving them to nine and second place behind South Africa, who would drop to 10 points, leaving the group wide open.
Rohr also addressed Nigeria’s recent 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe, a result that disappointed many fans. He was unsurprised by the outcome, attributing Zimbabwe’s resilience to their quality. Meanwhile, he blamed Benin’s 0-2 home defeat to South Africa on the fatigue caused by Ramadan fasting affecting his players.
The controversy centers on South African midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who reportedly received yellow cards in two prior qualifiers, making him ineligible to play against Lesotho. FIFA regulations stipulate that a player who accumulates two yellow cards must serve a one-match suspension.
South Africa’s head coach Hugo Broos declined to comment on the situation. “It is an issue that will be resolved in the coming days,” said the Belgian tactician.
A source within the South African Football Association (SAFA) attributed the error to administrative negligence, suggesting that the team’s manager failed to notify Broos about Mokoena’s suspension.
However, concerns have arisen in Nigerian football circles regarding the timing of Lesotho’s protest. According to FIFA regulations, any eligibility protest must be lodged within 24 hours of the match’s conclusion, leaving uncertainty over whether Lesotho’s claim was submitted on time.
