Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has dismissed reports of confusion over the captain’s armband during Ghana’s emphatic 5-0 win against Chad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The issue arose during the second half when captain Jordan Ayew was substituted, briefly leaving players unsure about who would assume the captaincy. However, speaking at the post-match press conference, Addo clarified that the team has an established leadership structure, and the situation was handled smoothly.
“I didn’t see the [captain’s] armband lying on the grass. After Jordan left, somebody took it. After Thomas left, somebody else took it, so everything is clear,” Addo explained.
The armband debate followed recent discussions about Jordan Ayew’s appointment as captain over vice-captain Thomas Partey. Despite external speculation, Addo reaffirmed that the transition of leadership on the field was seamless.

Canadian-born football prodigy TJ Tahid has taken a bold step toward representing Ghana on the international stage after making his debut for the Black Satellites on Thursday, March 21, 2025.
The Vancouver FC starlet was handed a starting role in Ghana’s U20 side during a four-nation tournament clash against Morocco U20. Tahid played 70 minutes in the tightly contested match, which ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat for the Black Satellites.
His debut comes as he vies for a spot in Ghana’s squad for the upcoming TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to take place in Cote D’Ivoire from April 26 to May 18, 2025. Ghana has been drawn into Group A alongside hosts Tanzania, DR Congo, and a representative from the Central African Football Federations Union (UNIFAC).
