Disappointment still lingers in the Black Stars camp after their shocking failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. A tournament they once dominated as four-time champions will now proceed without them, following a disastrous campaign that saw them finish bottom of their group with just three points.
Vice Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Stephen Appiah, a legendary former captain, acknowledged the players’ frustration but insisted they are determined to bounce back in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
“The players, the technical team, and everyone around the team is disappointed,” Appiah told Asempa FM. “For the first time, we didn’t win a game in the qualifiers, but the players are eager to make amends against Chad and Madagascar. The way they have been training clearly shows their hunger to win.”
With redemption on their minds, Ghana will take on Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 20, before heading to Morocco for a crucial clash against Madagascar. Otto Addo’s men are wrapping up their final training sessions, knowing that victory in these matches could reignite hope for the future.

Under the setting sun at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, the Black Princesses took to the pitch in a test of their progress under new head coach Charles Sampson. For Coach Sampson, however, the result was secondary. As he refines his squad ahead of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, he remains focused on development.
“I am satisfied with how the girls played. I wasn’t really looking at the result, but rather how they would function as a team,” he reflected. “I could see them replicating some of what we’ve worked on in training, which is a good sign. We’ll keep working on areas that need improvement and continue these matches to keep them in shape.”

In 1962, under the scorching Accra sun, a young Rev. Osei Kofi stepped onto the pitch against the mighty Real Madrid. The Black Stars faced off against a team featuring legends like Ferenc Puskás and Alfredo Di Stéfano, with many expecting a goal-fest in favor of the European giants. But what unfolded was a footballing spectacle—Ghana held their own, battling to a historic 3-3 draw.
Decades later, in an unexpected twist, former Leganés FC owners Victoria Pavón and Felipe Moreno stumbled upon this forgotten piece of history during a 2021 visit to Ghana. Initially skeptical when Rev. Kofi recounted the tale, they later confirmed its authenticity in Real Madrid’s archives. Moved by his story and his impact on Ghanaian football, they decided to honour him in Spain with a friendly match between their new club and Real Madrid.
Reflecting on that fateful day in 1962, Rev. Kofi recalled, “We were promised a grand celebration if we didn’t concede ten goals. I remember coming on in the second half with the score at 2-2. I dribbled past my marker and lofted a pass to Edward Acquah, who finished brilliantly to put us 3-2 ahead.”
Now, more than 60 years later, the Ghanaian legend embarks on a journey to Spain, where his name will be etched in football history once more. A tribute match in his honour will celebrate not just a single game but a legacy of resilience, skill, and Ghanaian football’s enduring spirit.
