When Chris Hughton accepted the role of Ghana’s head coach in February 2023, it was more than just another managerial job—it was a deeply personal moment. His late father, a proud Ghanaian, had the chance to witness his son take charge of the Black Stars before passing away just a month later.
“A lot of the pride comes from the fact that my father passed away last year, and I actually took on the role about a month beforehand, so he was able to see me take this role. That was a very proud moment for me,” Hughton shared.
The former Brighton and Newcastle manager stepped into the role after serving as a technical advisor. He knew the weight of expectation that came with leading a football-loving nation, where every game is scrutinized by passionate fans.
“I knew the pressure of taking the job when I took it, and if you’re not getting the right results then you will know about it,” he admitted.
Unfortunately, Hughton’s tenure was short-lived, as Ghana’s early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations led to his departure. Despite the disappointment, he remains proud of his time in charge and the experience he gained.
“I have still got a lot of energy. I’ve been in the game for a long time and I’d like that to continue,” he said, signaling his desire to stay in football.
Though his time with Ghana ended sooner than expected, Hughton will always cherish the pride of representing his father’s homeland, even if only for a brief moment.

Despite the challenges, the 65-year-old remains eager to continue his journey in football. “I still have a lot of energy, and I’d like to continue in the game,” he stated, leaving the door open for his next adventure.
