For Orji Okwonkwo, football is more than just a game—it’s his life. The 27-year-old Nigerian forward has faced setbacks that would have broken many, but through sheer determination, he is carving his path back to the top.
Once a rising star in Italian football, Okwonkwo’s career took an unexpected turn in 2022 when he was handed a four-year doping ban. Though later reduced to two years, the suspension kept him away from competitive football until March 2024. Yet, he never wavered in his belief.
“I never gave up. I trained every single day,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport, reflecting on the grueling journey back.

From his early days at Bologna to a brief stint in MLS with Montreal Impact, Italy has always felt like home. Now, he dreams of returning to Serie A—but first, he’s focused on helping Cittadella stay in Serie B.
“The passion here is different. I missed everything about this country,” he said.

Earlier this week, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle unveiled a 39-man provisional squad ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. The list includes a mix of seasoned internationals and eight new invitees, with Arokodare and Ogbu among them.
