Ghanaian football is at a crossroads, and former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Wilfred Osei Kweku ‘Palmer’ is not holding back in his criticism.
In an interview with Sportsblog247.com, Palmer did not mince words when asked about the state of the game in Ghana. His response was blunt: “Football is in an abysmal state.”
His remarks come in the wake of the Black Stars’ shocking failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the first time in 20 years that Ghana will miss out on Africa’s biggest football tournament. The team’s dismal qualifying campaign saw them collect just three points from six matches, with no wins to their name.
Palmer also took aim at GFA President Kurt Okraku’s leadership, delivering a harsh verdict on his tenure.
“I would rate Kurt Okraku 3 out of 10. This is for his effort in trying, but overall, he has failed,” he stated.
Despite the Black Stars’ struggles, there has been a glimmer of hope in Ghanaian football. The Black Queens, the country’s senior women’s team, have successfully secured qualification for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marking their return to the continental stage for the first time since 2018.
While the Black Queens’ success provides a silver lining, Palmer’s comments highlight the urgent need for reforms if Ghanaian football is to regain its former glory.

After a turbulent start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Ghana’s Black Stars have reignited their hopes with back-to-back victories against Mali and the Central African Republic. However, former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, Wilfred Osei Kweku ‘Palmer’, warns that there is still a long road ahead.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Palmer stressed that Ghana needs major improvements to secure a place at the global tournament in North America. Despite the recent wins, he remains skeptical about the team’s direction under head coach Otto Addo.
“We need to do a lot to qualify for the 2026 World Cup,” he stated. “The technical direction of the team must change.”
Palmer questioned Otto Addo’s tactical approach, pointing to his struggles during the AFCON qualifiers. He acknowledged the crucial win over Mali in Bamako but cautioned that the Malians have since strengthened their squad and changed their technical team.
“If they come to Accra and hit their stride, we could be in serious trouble,” he warned.
However, Palmer expressed optimism about the recent appointment of experienced German coach Winfried Schäfer as Ghana’s technical advisor and GFA technical director.
“Schäfer is a good coach. We considered bringing him in during our time, but I still believe the technical team must change,” he added.
With upcoming qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, the Black Stars must build on their momentum and address their weaknesses to keep their World Cup dream alive.
